How To Sell A Car You No Longer Need Or Drive

Posted on: 9 February 2023

Selling a car that you no longer need or want is not always easy. If you have an older car or one that you don't use and want to sell without the hassle of listing it and trying to find a buyer, you may want to consider talking with an unwanted car buyer from a dealership, scrap yard, or reseller.

Unwanted Cars

When you have a car or truck that is in good shape, but you are not using it, selling it and putting the money into something else may be a priority. There are unwanted car buyers working for dealerships and resellers who can look over the car for you and then make you an offer.

In most cases, you need to own the car and have the title, but some dealers will buy the car and pay the loan off for you. If that is the case, the buyer will offer you the difference in the value after deducting the loan, but it can help you get out from under a loan that you are dealing with and still make some money on the deal.

Check to see if the dealers in your area buy cars and if they will send out a car buyer or if you need to bring the vehicle to them. Sometimes car buyers will come with money in hand and a tow truck to take the car away for you, but each business may handle the process differently.

Wrecked Cars

If you own a car that was involved in an accident and never repaired, there are car buyers that may be interested in offering you some cash for the vehicle. Most businesses interested in these cars or trucks are scrap yards, salvage operations, or rebuilders interested in the vehicle for repair or to strip for replacement parts.

Car buyers looking for cars like these are often prepared to pay cash for them, and many times they will give you the best price for wrecked vehicles if they feel they can make some money from the parts. You will need to have the title to the car in most states, but some salvage operations will buy wrecked cars without one because they will break it up and are not reselling the vehicle.

Check the laws in your state to see if you can sell your junk car without a title. In some states, vehicles over twenty years old do not need a title, and you can sell it with a bill of sale as the only transfer of ownership, but don't assume that is the case in your area. Check with your local department of motor vehicles office to ensure the transaction is legal.
